Winter sun season has started at Halifax Stanfield (YHZ), and so has the annual question: drive and park, or take a taxi? Parking rates changed in 2026, and for many trips the answer is no longer obvious. This guide compares current YHZ parking costs with a return taxi, shows the break-even point, and covers the winter costs a rate card leaves out.

For a trip of a week or longer, a return taxi between downtown Halifax and YHZ (about $130–$150) costs less than parking in the terminal garage ($192 per week) and about the same as the Exterior Economy lot ($150 per week). Only Park’N Fly ($110 per week) is cheaper on parking alone. For a two-week trip, the taxi is cheaper than every on-airport option.
Halifax airport parking rates for 2026
Halifax Stanfield offers four parking options. All rates include HST.
- Terminal Reserved: $38 per day, booked online, in the parkade steps from the terminal. New as of October 1, 2026.
- Terminal General: $32 per day or $192 per week, in the covered parkade.
- Exterior Economy: $25 per day or $150 per week, open-air, with a $25 minimum per stay.
- Park’N Fly: $22 per day or $110 per week, at 668 Barnes Drive, with a free 24/7 shuttle.
Parking at YHZ has been card-only since June 1, 2026.

Parking totals use the posted daily and weekly rates. Fuel for the round trip, about 70 km from downtown, is extra for every parking option.
The break-even point
A return taxi costs the same whether you are away for 3 days or 3 weeks. Parking grows with every day. That gives a simple rule:
- Terminal General: a taxi is cheaper from about 5 days.
- Exterior Economy: a taxi is cheaper from about 6 to 7 days.
- Park’N Fly: cheaper than a taxi for one week, but a taxi wins for trips of roughly 8 to 9 days or more.
If you live in Dartmouth, Bedford or Fall River, you are closer to the airport, so ask for your flat fare. A shorter ride tips the math further toward the taxi.
Costs the parking rate doesn’t show
Winter on an open lot
Exterior Economy and Park’N Fly are uncovered. After a week of Nova Scotia winter, your car may need to be cleared of snow and ice before you can drive home, often after a long flight.
Shuttle and walking time
The airport lists Park’N Fly as about 10 to 15 minutes from the terminal by shuttle, and Exterior Economy as a 3 to 5 minute walk. Add that time on both ends, with luggage.
Late-night returns
Many winter sun flights land late in the evening. With a pre-booked taxi, your driver tracks the flight and meets you in Arrivals. With parking, you collect the car, clear it, and drive Highway 102 tired.
When parking is still the better choice
- Short trips of 1 to 4 days: daily parking usually costs less than a return taxi.
- Park’N Fly for exactly one week: it is the lowest-cost option if you don’t mind the shuttle.
- You live well outside the city: a longer taxi ride raises the fare, so compare your own quote.
- You need your car on landing: for example, to drive straight on to another town.

Book both legs at once with your departure time and return flight number.
